Shared on-line placement resources

My fellowship involves the creation of web-based resources that can be delivered through ULearn which will help students develop the skills they need for the Professional Training Year. I use the present tense deliberately because they’re still evolving.

Many of the resources are self-contained, interactive, and designed for self-study so that students can access help directly e.g. Preparing a CV (written in collaboration with the Careers Service); Team working; Giving Presentations; & Reflective learning. As they promote self-evaluation and reflection, these learning modules will complement and contribute to students' Personal Development Planning (PDP) and the content is appropriate to all disciplines.

Where excellent material was already available on the web e.g. the recently purchased Destinations website, I created a ‘hub’ for links to specific resources that support students going on placement.

Where appropriate, the hub also points students to places on campus where they can find additional face-to-face support.

Particular thanks go to Lindy Blair (also a SCEPTrE Fellow) for her substantial contribution to these web pages. Collaboration with Lindy also bore fruit with regard to the use of ULearn to streamline academic and administrative support for PDP and professional training. We both continue to work together and everything we create, we make available to others to share.

With another SCEPTrE Fellow, Steve Rowett, we also created an online guide to using PebblePad, the university’s e-portfolio system, which can be uploaded into ULearn as a learning module.

How might these resources be useful to academics?

· Personal tutors can direct students who have identified gaps in their skills to the material in ULearn.

· If academics wish to embed the resources within a module, there are activities that can be incorporated into face-to-face sessions or used to prepare for or follow up a class.

· Some of the activities are being used as part of the assessed component of accredited modules.

If you would like to see the resources or if you have material that is relevant to PDP or the preparation of students for professional training and would like to make it more interactive and available in ULearn, I would love to hear from you, so please contact me at A.Irving@surrey.ac.uk
