Improving the Student Experience through Student Advisers: completing the circle between Students, Academic Staff and Central Support Services
A Law graduate emailed me , saying: ‘Thank you for your help and understanding – you kept me sane when I really wondered if I could do it’. My SCEPTrE Fellowship will explore the potential for replicating the Student Adviser post that is proving invaluable in the Law and Politics departments across Surrey University. The Fellowship will look to develop the current role so that it is a model of excellence that supports the learning experience of students and helps enrich their time at Surrey.

Message about the completed project, with link to detailed webfolio!
My Sceptre Fellowship is finally complete and I have put it together as a webfolio so that you can dip in and out of parts that interest you rather than being confronted with a large and unwieldy report.
The Fellowship inevitably travelled some different paths from my original proposal, as opportunities arose such as the request from the Guildford School of Acting to help them review their current pastoral practices and explore the potential for a Student Adviser.
The webfolio website brings together all my research and activities towards the fellowship in a format which has been designed to enable you to dip in and out of areas of interest rather than be faced with a large report. All the documents that relate to this Fellowship can be accessed from the separate sections. The documents are presented in sections as follows:
Record of Research and Activities
This briefly describes each stage of my journey during the Fellowship year, which ended in April 2009. This also details activities undertaken because I was developing the role through the fellowship within the School of Law.
The Student Adviser Model
This is the developed job description for the Student Adviser, data analysis of the issues brought by students to the FML Student Advisers, Advice from a Student Adviser about the specific issues for Science students, the findings from my research with two US universities who have had Student Advisers for many years, and a conversation with the PiPs Student Adviser about the future of the role.
Embedding the model in FML
This summarises many conversations and consultations about the role of the personal tutors versus the Student Adviser and a conversation with the School of Management Student Adviser about the challenges of embedding the role.
Exploring GSA’s need for a Student Adviser
This details my observations of GSA’s current pastoral practices and recommendations to them.
Conversations with Computing
This details my conversation with the Director of Undergraduate Programmes.
Next Steps
This outlines recommendations of pastoral issues warranting further exploration at a central level in the university, and my conclusions about the future of the Student Adviser role
I hope you find this interesting reading and that it is a useful contribution to helping the University think further about how we help our students have the best experience they can at the University.
I also want to acknowledge my appreciation to Lindy Blair in the School of Management, without whose technical wizardry with Pebblepad this would indeed be an unwieldy word document.
