Bridging the Gap Between Campus and Placement.

Improving the Student University Learning and Placement Experience through Virtual Action Learning Sets (vALS)

The impetus for this project came from the experiences of students last year, when the structure of their module meant that they were in university for one week and then out in practice for 8 weeks, returning to the university for the underpinning theoretical input for the final 5 weeks. They were required to hand in a portfolio of learning in practice before they had covered all the supporting theory.

The students' feedback was that this was very stressful for them as they felt that they were being asked to write academic work before they had had the relevant input. There was a lot of email discussion between me, as the module tutor, and all the students who were seeking help, support and advice. As a result of this, I have ensured that the module structure has changed and the students will be in university for 4 weeks before going out into practice for 8 weeks, returning to the University for a final 2 weeks.

There is still a need, however, to sustain tutor/ student contact whilst the students are in placement to enhance the integration of theory and practice. We aim to develop a form of blended learning, incorporating virtual classroom software, on-line discussion forums and a wiki.
